2021 Color of the Year
Posted by Johanna Fox on
At the start of every year, Pantone (an authority on color) names its color of the year. Sometimes it’s two colors, like this year.
For 2021, yellow—Illuminating—and gray—Ultimate Gray—are the selected colors and Pantone described them as, “A marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting."

And we in the fabric and quilting worlds also know that Kona Cotton from Robert Kaufman deems a solid color of the year as well. This year’s color is Horizon. And we have it in stock!
Sew What?
You may be wondering what this all means to you, your friends, their friends, etc. Simply put, it’s fun. Have you ever considered making a 2-color quilt? Or limit your palette to solids? This is why we think it’s interesting and fun.
Yellow and Gray
Our own Diana is putting together a quilt top as you read this. She’s using a pattern called ‘Weave it to Me’ by Black Cat Creations and assembled a dazzling array of gray and yellow fabrics.
There are some batiks, Kona Cotton from Robert Kaufman Fabrics, Zoology by Gingiber for Moda Fabrics, Sun Print 2020 and Sun Print Light by Alison Glass for Andover Fabrics, Bee Joyful collection fabrics by Deb Strain and Grunge by Basic Grey for Moda Fabrics, and more. It’s so fabulous, we created a fat quarter bundle of all of it.
Beyond Fabric
Urth Yarns has gotten in on the action as well. It has introduced special editions of a yellow and gray yarn in its worsted, DK, Fingering, and Sock weights. Want some? Let us know!
What will you make with these three colors?
