Holidays in July QAL Week 2
Posted by Johanna Fox on
Hello and welcome back! It's Week 2 of the Holidays in July Quilt Along, if you are just now joining us, here's a snapshot of where we're headed and what we've been up to:
Week 1 - July 12th: Select and cut fabric
Week 2 - July 19th: Sew seven blocks
Week 3 - July 26th: Sew seven blocks
Week 4 - August 2nd: Sew seven blocks
Week 5 - August 9th: Sew seven blocks
Week 6 - August 16th: Sew seven blocks
Week 7 - August 23rd: Sew rows and assemble top
WEEK 2: SEW SEVEN BLOCKS
This week, we are sewing our tree blocks. We've had a blast so far seeing everyone's fabric choices and cut trees ready to go. They come together so fast that many have already completed a batch. Let’s have a look in our community section below and follow the hashtag #HolidaysinJulyQAL to see them all on social.
One variation you may wish to try is a wonky tree. They can add a bit of quirky fun and movement to your overall quilt and can be made with scraps. Take a look at a couple we made in the shop (and we had fun making them, too! So much fun, we seemingly skipped the pressing stage.)
If you don’t normally make anything in a wonky way, we have this tutorial you can read. If you match the block size (7.5” x 9.5”) of the original triangular tree shapes, you will be able to add in with ease.
NEED THE BLOCK PATTERN?
The block pattern is here: it's a free downloadable template from Cluck Cluck Sew!
FROM OUR COMMUNITY:
Check out this set of trees from @altita1
Check this tree block effect from @kristinmbeck
TIP: She used one square of background fabric and then one of her tree (in this case scrappy novelty fabrics). Cut the triangles and then swapped out the outer triangles for a positive / negative look that yields two tree blocks. (Photo shows four since she did this twice. Wink wink.)
WEEK 2 PROMPT
This week, your task is: Share your sewn blocks with us and tell us your favorite holiday tune. Use the hashtag #HolidaysinJulyQAL when you do.
HAVE FUN AND SEE YOU NEXT WEEK.
